Throughout its 250 years, Laredo
witnessed seven changes in sovereignty that each left its mark on the border
town: Spain, France, Mexico, Texas, the Republic of the Rio Grande, the
Confederate States of America and, since 1865, the United States of America.
All seven flags continue to fly proudly in Laredo, signifying its rich
heritage and its appreciation of diverse cultures. When Sanchez and the
founding families established Laredo, they knew that they had found something
special along the sparkling banks of the Rio Grande. They set the stage for a
city that would, a quarter of a millennium later, see strong growth, bask in
the radiance of her history and set a course for the next 250 years. Viva Laredo! Join us as we celebrate
Laredo’s rich culture and heritage throughout the year with a variety of
events for Laredo’s families to enjoy. |

It’s our birthday! The year 2005 marks
an important milestone for Laredo, Texas, as the city celebrates the 250th
anniversary of its founding. Since 1755, when Spaniard Tomas Sanchez
established Villa San Agustin de Laredo, people from the world over have
flocked to the Gateway City seeking fortunes, opportunities and new
beginnings, bringing with them new ideas, cultures and a drive to make a life
on what was once a desolate frontier. |
