2010 Legislative State Agenda

In this new decade, Laredo has poised itself to contribute to the economic prosperity of Texas and only by helping each other and leveraging our collective resources will we ensure that Laredo and Texas continue their success. I am Raul G. Salinas, proud Mayor of Laredo--your number one inland port city!

Did you know that Laredo is the most efficient and safest port in the world and that we play an invaluable role in helping to facilitate the nation’s trade?

Laredo’s port activity accounts for over 12,000 trucks crossed every day, making us the sixth largest commercial port in the United States. We are also the #1 railroad interchange point on the U.S./Mexico border with 1,200 rail cars crossing every day. And we are the eighth largest air cargo hub in the Americas. Altogether, the City of Laredo generates more than $173 billion annually in international trade.

Laredo is a vibrant, dynamic, growing, and safe city. As a border community, the Laredo Police Department has always faced – and met – the challenge of protecting its citizens and also the rest of the country. Even before 9/11, hometown security for Laredo meant homeland security.

As one of the fastest growing border communities in the nation, 230,000 citizens swells to approximately 350,000 on a daily basis as visitors from across the river cross into Laredo. While our community welcomes our neighbors, this influx of individuals affects our ability to properly service the community. State funding is imperative for the health of our border.

I ask you to join me and my colleagues as we present to you our working agenda for “Laredo: Hub of the Americas.” Together we can ensure that Laredo and Texas prosper.
