Trash Tip of the Week:
Recycle your old Yellow Pages directory!

From May 3, 2004 through May 19, old directories may be dropped off at Laredo H-E-B stores, Circle K stores, fire stations, Pizza Hut restaurants, Laredo City Hall at 1110 Houston and the city’s Public Works Department at 4312 Daugherty.  Pizza Hut will offer a free Pepsi for each old directory and Coastal Maverick Markets will offer a free fountain drink.

Laredo residents may put their outdated directories in the curbside recycling Blue Bag.  In addition, area schools will compete for a cash prize to see which school can collect the most phone books for recycling.  Under a new option this year, businesses or other organizations with at least 100 old phone books may have them picked up free of charge by sending a message to Project.ReDirectory@sbcdo.com.

Information on the nearest drop-off locations is available by calling a toll-free number – 1-800-953-4400 – and then entering the appropriate ZIP code.  Only outdated directories should be taken to the sites, since other items such as plastic bags can cause problems in the recycling process.

The recycling campaign saves natural resources and landfill space.  Old phone books can be recycled into a wide variety of products, such as bathroom tissue, paper towels, cereal boxes and new directories.
