SUBJECT:    Final Reading  / Ordinance #2002-0-282

 

Authorizing the City Manager to accept a grant in the amount of $42,500 from the Texas Department of Transportation and to amend the City of Laredo’s FY 2002-2003 annual budget in the amount of $65,250 to fund the El Protector Program.  The Texas Department of Transportation will be designating $42,500 and the City of Laredo will be designating $22,750 in matching funds.  Funds are available in the general fund balance.  The funding for this grant will be from October 1, 2002 through September 30, 2003.

ORDINANCE #2002-0-282

 

Authorizing the City Manager to accept a grant in the amount of $42,500 from the Texas Department of Transportation and to amend the City of Laredo’s FY 2002-2003 annual budget in the amount of $65,250 to fund the El Protector Program.  The Texas Department of Transportation will be designating $42,500 and the City of Laredo will be designating $22,750 in matching funds.  Funds are available in the general fund balance.  The funding for this grant will be from October 1, 2002 through September 30, 2003.

 

Whereas, the Laredo Police Department El Protector Program serves to provide traffic safety to the citizens of the City of Laredo; and

 

          Whereas, the El Protector Program has been in effect in the City of Laredo since 1988; and

 

           Whereas, a grant from the Texas Department of Transportation is available to the City of Laredo to provide for the continuation of the El Protector Program which would pay salaries, and fringe benefits to a patrol officer; and

 

            Whereas, The State of Texas, through the Department of Transportation, will contribute $42,500 and the City of Laredo will designate $22,750 for the fiscal year 2002-2003 for the El Protector Program; and

 

            Whereas, the Laredo Police Department Chief of Police recommends the acceptance of the grant for the El Protector Program in the amount of $42,500; and

 

            Whereas, the City Council finds that such a budget amendment should be made and it will be beneficial to the City of Laredo.

 

 

            NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LAREDO THAT:

 

 

Section 1:  the City Manager is hereby authorized to accept a grant from the Department of Transportation in the amount of $42,500.

 

Section 2:  the City of Laredo will designate $22,750 in matching funds where such funds are available in the general fund balance.

 

Section 3:  the City of Laredo’s FY 2002-2003 annual budget be amended in the amount of $65,250 to fund the El Protector Program.

 

Section 4:  fringe benefits appropriated during the budget workshop will remain in the respective accounts.  Grant does not allow the reimbursement of expenditures of fringe benefits from the awarded amount nor the required match.
