AMENDING THE CITY OF LAREDO FY 2002 ANNUAL BUDGET IN THE AMOUNT OF $5,000 FOR A GRANT FROM THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES’ GENERAL PRESERVATION ASSESSMENT GRANT PROGRAM, PROVIDING FOR EFFECTIVE DATE.

  PREVIOUS COUNCIL ACTION:

 

Resolution 2001-R-035 approved on April 2, 2001 to submit the grant.

Resolution 2001-R-090 approved September 4, 2001 to accept the grant.

Public Hearing & Introductory Ordinance on June 3, 2002.

 

 

  BACKGROUND: 

The grant will assess the conditions and needs of five archival collections in Webb County, namely: Laredo Public Library, Webb County Heritage Foundation, San Agustin Catholic Church, Texas A&M International University and Laredo Community College.  In addition, a workshop will be held to train those responsible for these collections on proper environmental storage, cleaning & treatments of rare and fragile documents. 

 

This assessment is a preliminary step to seek additional funding for a major digitization project for Laredo Public Library’s archival documents…  special priority being the Laredo Archives.

The Advisory Committee recommended acceptance of the grant and approval of the budget amendment on August 22, 2001.

     Recommend approval of the ordinance.

 

ORDINANCE 2002-O-121  

 

AMENDING THE CITY OF LAREDO FY 2002 ANNUAL BUDGET IN THE AMOUNT OF $5,000 FOR A GRANT FROM THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES’ GENERAL PRESERVATION ASSESSMENT GRANT PROGRAM, PROVIDING FOR EFFECTIVE DATE.

 

WHEREAS, the City Council authorized the City Manager to submit a grant application to the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) for preservation assessment and supplies in the amount of $5,000, and;

 

WHEREAS, the National Endowment for the Humanities awarded this grant it was accepted by City Council, and;

 

WHEREAS, the Laredo Public Library’s archives, as well as, archival holdings of the Webb County Heritage Foundation, San Agustin Catholic Church, Texas A&M International University and Laredo Community College will also receive assessments, and;

 

WHEREAS, this grant will provide the necessary direction, instruction and scope of work to preserve Laredo’s historical documents, and supplies, and;   

 

WHEREAS, the City Council recognizes the need provide safe storage and retrieval of archives in Laredo,

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LAREDO THAT:

 

The City Manager is authorized to amend the City of Laredo FY 2000 Annual Budget in the amount of $5,000 for a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities’ General Preservation Assessment Grant Program.
