|
Nutrifit summer Camp: The Nutrifit Summer Camp is a one week camp provided to WIC Children and their siblings aged 4-11 years old that focuses on Nutrition Education, Healthy Snack Building and Physical Activity through age appropriate classes.
This
division includes the Women, Infants and Children’s (WIC) Supplemental
Food Program, special diet counseling given to Maternity Clinic
patients and to diabetics, as well as nutrition information, classes
and nutrition seminars provided to the community and schools upon
request.
Women,
Infants and Children (WIC) Program: A nutrition program designed to
detect nutritionally "at risk" women, infants and children and
assistance to prevent low-birth weight and premature infants, iron
deficiency anemia, failure to thrive, obesity, etc. WIC serves
pregnant, breastfeeding (for one year), and postpartum (for six
months) women, as well as infants and children up to five years of
age. WIC promotes breastfeeding and provides special nutrition
classes, individual counseling, frequent follow up to high risk
clients, health assessment, health care and social service referrals,
and immunizations. 3,000 children are immunized by the WIC program
each month. Foods provided by the WIC Program are based on their
nutritious protein, vitamin, calcium, iron and low sugar content.
Nutrition and health education is also provided as well as limited
nutritional health screening.
Among the 8 WIC clinics, an average of 21,000 participants are seen
per month. About 20,000 food packages with an average value of $47.00
are distributed per month, totalling more than $940,000 worth of food
vouchers.
Heart and Stroke Healthy City Recognition Program
The City of Laredo, along with other Texas cities, will be included in the 2010 assessment process for the Heart and Stroke Healthy City Recognition Program from January to August of 2010. This program is administered by the Texas Council on Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke (CVD Council) to recognize cities in Texas for their achievements in creating healthy communities.
This state-wide program recognizes Texas cities for having in place a set of ten evidence-based, community indicators that are known to be important in reducing the burden of heart disease and stroke, which are the number one and number three killers of men and women in Texas and the United States.
This year the City of Laredo Health Department will form a team of local stakeholders to participate in the city assessment process. Input from the local stakeholdersis critical in order for Laredo to receive the gold standard and be recognized.
Projecto Bienestar Laredo:
The Bienestar Health Program is a bilingual school-based health program that aims to decrease dietary fat, to increase physical fitness levels, to prevent obesity, and to prevent diabetes. The program is research-based and implements kindergarten through eighth grade learning activities from a Social Cognitive Theory. The children learn these health behaviors through five health programs: The Bienestar Health and P.E. Curriculum, The After School Health Club, the Family and Community Program, and the Cafeteria Program. With these programs, the children have shown to learn the importance of cutting down on fatty foods, increasing fiber intake, and exercising regularly. The City of Laredo Health Department has provided the research arm for Projecto Bienestar Laredo.
