What are Co- Occurring Disorders (CODs)?

People with mental health disorders are more likely to experience an alcohol or substance use disorder. Co-occurring disorders can be difficult to diagnose due to the complexity of symptoms, as both may vary in severity. In many cases, people receive treatment for one disorder while the other disorder remains untreated.

Furthermore, the consequences of undiagnosed, untreated, or undertreated co-occurring disorders can lead to a higher likelihood of experiencing homelessness, incarceration, medical illnesses, suicide, or even early death.

What is Group Therapy?

Self-help groups, also known as recovery support groups, play a vital role in substance abuse treatment. In a self-help group, the members share a common challenge and goal of recovery. One reason groups work so well is that they engage therapeutic forces and enable clients to bond with a culture of recovery.
