City of Laredo Public Health Department Awarded 1.1 Million Dollars from CPRIT to Expand Cancer Screening and Early Detection in South Texas

Post Date:12/05/2025

Laredo, Texas – The City of Laredo Public Health Department has been awarded a 1.1 million dollar Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) grant to launch VIDA, a new initiative focused on reducing breast and liver cancer disparities in Webb, Zapata, and Jim Hogg counties. This grant will support a two year program designed to expand access to cancer prevention services for medically underserved residents. The VIDA program is set to officially launch in the new year.

VIDA, which stands for Vigilancia, Información, Detección y Apoyo, will provide women with no cost breast cancer screening, culturally tailored educational materials, and personalized navigation support for anyone needing follow up care. The initiative also broadens access to hepatitis C testing, a key step in preventing liver cancer in a region where liver disease rates remain higher than the state average. Data show that Hispanic women in Webb County continue to experience higher late stage breast cancer diagnoses and mortality compared to state rates. VIDA directly addresses these disparities by reducing financial, informational, and transportation barriers to early detection.

Through this CPRIT award, the City of Laredo Public Health Department will expand screening opportunities, strengthen community outreach, provide bilingual education, and ensure timely navigation for individuals who need follow up care. These services are designed to help residents access diagnostic testing, treatment referrals, and continued support without unnecessary delays.

VIDA is supported by strong regional collaboration. Gateway Community Health Center will serve as a clinical partner in increasing access to essential cancer screenings for underserved communities. Texas A&M International University will serve as Co Principal Investigators, leading program evaluation, research support, and the development of culturally responsive education strategies that enhance outreach and community engagement. Promotores de salud will also play a key role in guiding residents through screening and follow up services.

This 1.1 million dollar CPRIT grant represents a transformative investment in the health of South Texas women and families. By expanding early detection and improving access to coordinated care, VIDA will help reduce cancer deaths, strengthen community health, and build a healthier future for the region.
