Laredo Public Health Reminds Mobile Food Unit Operators of New Statewide Permitting Requirement Effective July 1

Effective July 1, 2026, pursuant to Texas House Bill 2844 (2025), mobile food unit operators will be required to obtain a permit issued by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) to continue operating within the State of Texas. Permits issued by local jurisdictions prior to this date will no longer be valid for operation on or after July 1, 2026, and are not expected to be grandfathered under the new law.

All mobile food unit operators are responsible for monitoring regulatory updates and ensuring compliance with applicable state requirements, including the timely submission of any required applications, fees, and supporting documentation to DSHS.

A partir del 1 de Julio de 2026, de conformidad con el Proyecto de Ley 2844 de la Cámara de Representantes de Texas (2025), los operadores de unidades móviles de alimentos estarán obligados a obtener un permiso emitido por el Departamento de Servicios de Salud del Estado de Texas (DSHS) para continuar operando dentro del Estado de Texas. Los permisos emitidos por jurisdicciones locales antes de esta fecha ya no serán válidos para operar a partir del 1 de Julio de 2026, y no se espera que sean reconocidos bajo la nueva ley.

An Academic Health Department

The City of Laredo Public Health Department designated as an Academic Public Health Department (APHD) through the Public Health Foundation. This partnership is created by the formal alliance of a health department and an academic institution which trains future health care professionals. This relationship is akin to the "teaching hospital" affiliation found between medical schools and hospitals. APHD partnerships play a vital role in enhancing public health education, research, and service.

The designation of Laredo Public Health as an Academic Public Health Department bridges the gap between public health practice and academia. APHD partnerships are present in communities across the United States, and existing APHDs serve as models for other organizations aiming to establish such partnerships. The City of Laredo Public Health Department now joins these esteemed APHDs nationwide.
