Platting Overview

Platting is the process of legally subdividing land. It creates a detailed map—called a plat—that shows property boundaries, streets, drainage, easements (areas reserved for utilities), and other important features.

Platting ensures that new development is safe, accessible, and connected to essential city services like water, sewer, and roads. It also helps prevent future issues such as blocked access, improper drainage, or lots that do not meet development standards.

Key things the platting process addresses:

  • Proper access to streets and public roads
  • Availability of water and sewer connections
  • Storm drainage and flood protection
  • Lot size and layout
  • Placement of utility easements
  • Compliance with city development standards

If you plan to develop in Laredo - or in areas just outside the city limits (known as the extra-territorial jurisdiction) - platting is likely required. Unplatted land may not qualify for building permits or utility services until a plat is approved and recorded.
